Israel and Animal Welfare - Animal Rights Activism

Animal Rights Activism

In May, 2001, eight alleged animal rights activists sent a faxed death threat to immunologist and former dean Shraga Segal of Ben Gurion University medical school, targeting Segal and his family. The threat was made after Segal appeared on a television talk show about animal experimentation with Likud party member Dani Naveh. Segal, a member of the National Council for Animal Experimentation, objected to Naveh's proposal to increase the number of animal rights/animal welfare activists on the council, whom at the time represented three out of 23 academic members. Naveh called for expanding the number of activists from a third to a half of the council.

Famous quotes containing the words animal and/or rights:

The animal is one with its life activity. It does not distinguish the activity from itself. It is its activity. But man makes his life activity itself an object of his will and consciousness. He has a conscious life activity. It is not a determination with which he is completely identified.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)

It is difficult for me to imagine the same dedication to women’s rights on the part of the kind of man who lives in partnership with someone he likes and respects, and the kind of man who considers breast-augmentation surgery self-improvement.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
