Islands Region

The Islands Region is one of four regions of Papua New Guinea (PNG) comprising the Bismarck Archipelago and North Solomon Islands located north-east of the mainland. This is the least densely inhabited region of the country with a population of 750,000 (14% of PNG) and distinct through its history, as shown by the prevalence of Austronesian languages and archeological findings of Lapita pottery culture.

Famous quotes containing the words islands and/or region:

The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line—the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea. It was a phase of this problem that caused the Civil War.
    —W.E.B. (William Edward Burghardt)

When the excessively shy force themselves to be forward, they are frequently surprisingly unsubtle and overdirect and even rude: they have entered an extreme region beyond their normal personality, an area of social crime where gradations don’t count; unavailable to them are the instincts and taboos that booming extroverts, who know the territory of self-advancement far better, can rely on.
    Nicholson Baker (b. 1957)
