Isis (journal) - History

History

Isis was established in Wondelgem in Ghent (Belgium) in 1912 by George Sarton and is the official publication of the History of Science Society. The journal predates the society and the society was founded "to secure the future of Isis". It was not published between 1915 and 1918 because of World War I; publication resumed in 1919 after Sarton was established at Harvard University.

Contributions were originally in any of four European languages (English, French, German, and Italian), but since the 1920s only English has been used. Publication is partly supported by an endowment from the Dibner Fund. Two associated publications are Osiris (established 1936 by Sarton) and Horus, his bibliography on the history of science. For the first forty years Sarton was the editor of Isis.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

You treat world history as a mathematician does mathematics, in which nothing but laws and formulas exist, no reality, no good and evil, no time, no yesterday, no tomorrow, nothing but an eternal, shallow, mathematical present.
    Hermann Hesse (1877–1962)

We have need of history in its entirety, not to fall back into it, but to see if we can escape from it.
    José Ortega Y Gasset (1883–1955)

We know only a single science, the science of history. One can look at history from two sides and divide it into the history of nature and the history of men. However, the two sides are not to be divided off; as long as men exist the history of nature and the history of men are mutually conditioned.
    Karl Marx (1818–1883)
