Isaac W. Smith (surveyor) - Honors

Honors

The Portland, Oregon Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is named in honor of Col. Isaac W. Smith. On April 9, 2010, on the Anniversary of the Surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee to Gen. Ulysses Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Michael Snyder proposed to Jenny Shipman at the Grave of Col. Smith. Kneeling at the footstone, Michael offered to surrender his life to Jenny. Unable to make it to Virginia in time to propose to Jenny on this date at the Wilmer McLean house, Col. Smith's grave site was chosen to bear witness, as Col. Smith had personally been at Appomattox Courthouse and surrendered with Gen. Lee on April 9, 1865.
