Iron(II) Sulfide - Forms of Iron Sulfide

Forms of Iron Sulfide

"Iron sulfide" exists in several distinct forms, which differ in the ratio of sulfur to iron and properties:

  • Pyrrhotite, Fe1-xS, a mineral, which displays ferrimagnetism and crystallizes in monoclinic system. Iron metal shows ferromagnetism; iron sulfides do not.
  • Troilite, FeS, a stoichiometric compound that adopts hexagonal symmetry.
  • Mackinawite, Fe1+xS the least stable form of iron sulfide; mackinawite has a layered structure.
  • Pyrite and marcasite, which are diamagnetic minerals, have the formula FeS2.
  • Greigite (Fe3S4) a ferromagnetic species akin to magnetite (Fe3O4).

Famous quotes containing the words forms of, forms and/or iron:

All forms of government symbolize an immortal government, common to all dynasties and independent of numbers, perfect where two men exist, perfect where there is only one man.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

I am not so foolish as to declaim against forms. Forms are as essential as bodies; but to exalt particular forms, to adhere to one form a moment after it is outgrown, is unreasonable, and it is alien to the spirit of Christ.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
