Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station

The Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station (Romanian: Porţile de Fier I, Serbian: Ђердап I, Đerdap I) is the largest dam on the Danube river and one of the largest hydro power plants in Europe. It is located on the Iron Gate gorge, between Romania and Serbia.

The Romanian side of the power station produces approximately 5.65 TWh annually, while the Serbian side of the power station produces 5.4 TWh. The discrepancy in power output between the two halves is due to the generating equipment. While Romania's equipment is newer and thus more efficient (thereby generating more power), it is proving more unreliable; resulting in increased downtime for maintenance/repairs, and consequently lower annual power output overall.

Famous quotes containing the words iron, gate, power and/or station:

    Industrial man—a sentient reciprocating engine having a fluctuating output, coupled to an iron wheel revolving with uniform velocity. And then we wonder why this should be the golden age of revolution and mental derangement.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

    Duns at his lordship’s gate began to meet;
    And brickdust Moll had screamed through half the street.
    The turnkey now his flock returning sees,
    Duly let out a-nights to steal for fees:
    The watchful bailiffs take their silent stands,
    And schoolboys lag with satchels in their hands.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)

    I never saw love as luck, as that gift from the gods which put everything else in place, and allowed you to succeed. No, I saw love as reward. One could find it only after one’s virtue, or one’s courage, or self-sacrifice, or generosity, or loss, has succeeded in stirring the power of creation.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
