Irish Museums Association

The Irish Museums Association (IMA) is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the interests of museums and those who work in them throughout Ireland, both north and south. It was founded in 1977.

The IMA organises an annual conference in February, an Annual Lecture in November, publishes newsletters in Spring and Autumn and produces a journal Museum Ireland (ISSN 0961-9690) each Winter. The Association also organises lectures and special events in collaboration with other museum-related bodies. They welcome as members anyone working in, or with an interest in, Irish museums and aim to be the voice of the Irish museums community.

The Irish Museums Association’s last Annual Conference took place in Limerick from 24 to 26 February 2012. Among the personalities invited to deliver a speech: Julien Anfruns, Director General, International Council of Museums (ICOM); Michael Starrett, Chief Executive Officer, Heritage Council; Chris Bailey, Director, Northern Ireland Museums Council.

Famous quotes containing the words irish, museums and/or association:

I went to a very militantly Republican grammar school and, under its influence, began to revolt against the Establishment, on the simple rule of thumb, highly satisfying to a ten-year-old, that Irish equals good, English equals bad.
    Bernadette Devlin (b. 1947)

In museums and palaces we are alternate radicals and conservatives.
    Henry James (1843–1816)

They that have grown old in a single state are generally found to be morose, fretful and captious; tenacious of their own practices and maxims; soon offended by contradiction or negligence; and impatient of any association but with those that will watch their nod, and submit themselves to unlimited authority.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)
