Generalizations and Non-pitch Uses
The term "interval" can also be generalized to other music elements besides pitch. David Lewin's Generalized Musical Intervals and Transformations uses interval as a generic measure of distance to show musical transformations that can change—for instance—one rhythm into another, or one formal structure into another.
