Interstate 69 in Kentucky - Federal Legislation Designating Parkways As I-69

Federal Legislation Designating Parkways As I-69

On May 2, 2008, the House of Representatives passed HR-1195 (SAFETEA-LU Technical Corrections Act of 2008) which designates the Breathitt Parkway from Henderson to Madisonville, and the Western Kentucky Parkway from Madisonville to I-24 at Eddyville as I-69. It further designates the Audubon Parkway as a future spur (I-X69) of I-69 once necessary upgrades are completed. President Bush signed the bill on June 6, 2008 and I-69 signs began appearing on the Parkways during the summer of 2008.

On June 6, 2008, President George W. Bush signed the SAFETEA-LU Technical Corrections Act of 2008 into law. This legislation applies the I-69 designation to the following roadways:

  • Pennyrile Parkway from just south of the Audubon Parkway (possible Future Interstate 369) in Henderson to the Western Kentucky Parkway near Madisonville
  • Western Kentucky Parkway from the Pennyrile Parkway to Interstate 24 near Eddyville
  • Interstate 24 from Eddyville to the Purchase Parkway near Calvert City
  • Purchase Parkway from Interstate 24 to the US-51 interchange at the Tennessee state line

Although the aforementioned freeway segments have been legally defined as I-69, it is unclear at this point as to whether or not they are signed as such due to conflicting reports on I-69 signage from the state and local officials and the local public. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet indicated in May 2008 that they planned to sign the parkway segments as I-69 as soon as President Bush signed HR-1195 into law. In contrary, a September 25, 2008 article in the Evansville Courier-Press indicates that while I-69's route has been defined, the FHWA has not yet authorized Kentucky to start erecting I-69 signs. However, comments from readers on this article suggest that I-69 signs may already be in place on the Pennyrile Parkway. Signs on the Western Kentucky Parkway now read "I-69" and "Former Western Kentucky Parkway" from the Pennyrile Parkway to the intersection of the Western Kentucky at I-24 (as the photo of I-69 at Dawson Springs shows).

Signage and mile marker posts were changed in mid-December 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words federal and/or legislation:

The Federal Constitution has stood the test of more than a hundred years in supplying the powers that have been needed to make the Central Government as strong as it ought to be, and with this movement toward uniform legislation and agreements between the States I do not see why the Constitution may not serve our people always.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

Coming out, all the way out, is offered more and more as the political solution to our oppression. The argument goes that, if people could see just how many of us there are, some in very important places, the negative stereotype would vanish overnight. ...It is far more realistic to suppose that, if the tenth of the population that is gay became visible tomorrow, the panic of the majority of people would inspire repressive legislation of a sort that would shock even the pessimists among us.
    Jane Rule (b. 1931)
