Oklahoma City Crosstown Realignment
The I-40 Oklahoma City Crosstown Expressway was built in 1966; however, this stretch of elevated highway is too narrow for existing traffic, and is in disrepair. In response, I-40 has been relocated a few blocks south of the exiting route, with the original elevated route torn down, and a landscaped boulevard built on the old right-of-way, similar to the I-30 reconstruction through downtown Fort Worth, Texas. The project was completed in February 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words oklahoma, city and/or crosstown:
“I know only one person who ever crossed the ocean without feeling it, either spiritually or physically.... he went from Oklahoma to France and back again ... without ever getting off dry land. He remembers several places I remember too, and several French words, but he says firmly, We must of went different ways. I dont rightly recollect no water, ever.”
—M.F.K. Fisher (19081992)
“The language of the younger generation ... has the brutality of the city and an assertion of threatening power at hand, not to come. It is military, theatrical, and at its most coherent probably a lasting repudiation of empty courtesy and bureaucratic euphemism.”
—Elizabeth Hardwick (b. 1916)
“The three of them are enveloped
turning now to go crosstown in their
sense of each other, of pleasure,
of weather, of corners,
of leisurely tensions between them
and private silence.”
—Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
