Interstate 285 (North Carolina) - History

History

Approved by AASHTO in September 2005, after receiving an earlier approval from the FHWA in July 2005, I-285 would connect Interstate 85 to Winston-Salem in concurrency with US 52, a total of 23 miles (37 km). The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) put up "Future Interstate 285 Corridor" signs along the route in February 2006. These signs will remain until improvements are made to bring the road up to Interstate Highway standards whereby the route will receive its Interstate 285 signs. The $2.5 million project to improve the roadway was scheduled to start in October 2011.

The I-285 route could be extended northward another 10 miles (16 km) to the US 52 interchange with the future Winston-Salem Northern Beltway (Future I-74) if the current freeway through Winston-Salem is upgraded to Interstate Highway standards. The estimated cost of this upgrade was $500 million and any project to do so would not start until at least 2013.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Anyone who is practically acquainted with scientific work is aware that those who refuse to go beyond fact rarely get as far as fact; and anyone who has studied the history of science knows that almost every great step therein has been made by the “anticipation of Nature.”
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

The reverence for the Scriptures is an element of civilization, for thus has the history of the world been preserved, and is preserved.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

... that there is no other way,
That the history of creation proceeds according to
    Stringent laws, and that things
Do get done in this way, but never the things
We set out to accomplish and wanted so desperately
    To see come into being.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
