International Recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

International Recognition Of Abkhazia And South Ossetia

Abkhazia and South Ossetia are two partially recognised republics in the Caucasus, which are viewed by others as being a part of Georgia. The Republic of Abkhazia and the Republic of South Ossetia were recognised following the 2008 South Ossetia War between Russia and Georgia by six and five UN member states respectively, though Vanuatu has since withdrawn their recognition of Abkhazia. They recognise each other, and also have some recognition from non-UN member states.

Georgia and the vast majority of countries of the world do not recognise their independence and officially consider them as sovereign territory of the Georgian state.
