The olympiad was founded as a dissidence inside the International Astronomy Olympiad in order to increase the scope of the organization. The first IOAA site states that the "IOAA is designed to be a truly international organization on Astronomy and Astrophysics competitions. The organization is run by an international committee, whose members are elected from international members of the organization."

The first IOAA was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in November, 2007. The next IOAA will be held in Volos, Greece, from July 27 to August 4, 2013.

Famous quotes containing the word astronomy:

Awareness of the stars and their light pervades the Koran, which reflects the brightness of the heavenly bodies in many verses. The blossoming of mathematics and astronomy was a natural consequence of this awareness. Understanding the cosmos and the movements of the stars means understanding the marvels created by Allah. There would be no persecuted Galileo in Islam, because Islam, unlike Christianity, did not force people to believe in a “fixed” heaven.
