International Lifeboat Federation - Operation

Operation

Today, the International Maritime Rescue Federation represents more than 90 organisation, from the world's largest maritime rescue services to new start-up organisations, which come from over 60 different countries all around the world.

The organisation is run by a small secretariat based in Aberdeen, Scotland and the RNLI head of operations, Michael Vlasto is chair of the trustees, with a New Zealander, Bruce Reid as chief executive.

The most recent World Maritime Rescue Congress was held in Shanghai, China in August 2011, devoted particularly to establishing a draft Code of Practice for the operation of search and rescue craft. "Quite often the nearest vessel to one in distress is another large vessel that is not necessarily a rescue vessel but could still possibly aid in getting people out of the water. The IMRF is exploring ways of getting this done" particularly when it is too rough for a ship to launch its lifeboats, explains Michael Vlasto.

Famous quotes containing the word operation:

Waiting for the race to become official, he began to feel as if he had as much effect on the final outcome of the operation as a single piece of a jumbo jigsaw puzzle has to its predetermined final design. Only the addition of the missing fragments of the puzzle would reveal if the picture was as he guessed it would be.
    Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928)

It is critical vision alone which can mitigate the unimpeded operation of the automatic.
    Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980)
