International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility - Construction

Construction

The IFMIF will consist of two parallel accelerators, each about 50 m long, producing beams of deuterium nuclei. These, on contact with a lithium target, will be converted into high-energy neutrons and used to irradiate materials specimens and test components.

Preparation for IFMIF construction is expected to have begun around 2006, although operation testing of materials is not scheduled until roughly 2017. IFMIF is unlikely, therefore, to be useful in the construction of the first-generation ITER reactor, but will provide important construction information for commercial fusion reactors after ITER, such as DEMO.

Famous quotes containing the word construction:

The construction of life is at present in the power of facts far more than convictions.
    Walter Benjamin (1892–1940)

No real “vital” character in fiction is altogether a conscious construction of the author. On the contrary, it may be a sort of parasitic growth upon the author’s personality, developing by internal necessity as much as by external addition.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

No construction stiff working overtime takes more stress and straining than we did just to stay high.
Gus Van Sant, U.S. screenwriter and director, and Dan Yost. Bob Hughes (Matt Dillon)
