Institute of National Importance (INI) is a status that may be conferred to a higher education institution in India by an act of parliament, an institution which "serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state". INIs receive special recognition and funding. The Department of Higher Education's list of 13 February 2012 includes 39 institutions. Other institutes were also officially declared INIs on other occasions, and are also listed below. The Institutes of Information Technology Bill 2010 seeks to add the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) to the list. The bill was approved on 17 August 2012.
