Institute of National Importance

Institute of National Importance (INI) is a status that may be conferred to a higher education institution in India by an act of parliament, an institution which "serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state". INIs receive special recognition and funding. The Department of Higher Education's list of 13 February 2012 includes 39 institutions. Other institutes were also officially declared INIs on other occasions, and are also listed below. The Institutes of Information Technology Bill 2010 seeks to add the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) to the list. The bill was approved on 17 August 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words institute, national and/or importance:

Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

Let us waive that agitated national topic, as to whether such multitudes of foreign poor should be landed on our American shores; let us waive it, with the one only thought, that if they can get here, they have God’s right to come.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

For even satire is a form of sympathy. It is the way our sympathy flows and recoils that really determines our lives. And here lies the vast importance of the novel, properly handled. It can inform and lead into new places our sympathy away in recoil from things gone dead. Therefore the novel, properly handled, can reveal the most secret places of life: for it is the passional secret places of life, above all, that the tide of sensitive awareness needs to ebb and flow, cleansing and freshening.
