Institute For High Energy Physics

The Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEP) was opened in 1965 in Protvino near Moscow, Russia. The institute is known for the particle accelerator U-70 synchrotron launched in 1967, which had the largest proton energy in the world for five years. The first director of the institute in 1963—1974 was Anatoli Logunov.

Famous quotes containing the words institute, high, energy and/or physics:

Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

The house one story high in front, three stories
On the end it presented to the road.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

A great number of the disappointments and mishaps of the troubled world are the direct result of literature and the allied arts. It is our belief that no human being who devotes his life and energy to the manufacture of fantasies can be anything but fundamentally inadequate
    Christopher Hampton (b. 1946)

The pace of science forces the pace of technique. Theoretical physics forces atomic energy on us; the successful production of the fission bomb forces upon us the manufacture of the hydrogen bomb. We do not choose our problems, we do not choose our products; we are pushed, we are forced—by what? By a system which has no purpose and goal transcending it, and which makes man its appendix.
    Erich Fromm (1900–1980)
