Hypodermic Injections in Nature

Various animals, and some plants, have been injecting for various reasons long before humans began doing so in a process commonly called stinging. Some examples include:

  • Snakes, wasps, scorpions: poison, to kill prey and self-defense.
  • Some bees: poison, to defend themselves and their nests.
  • Cnidaria (jellyfish, etc.): poison, to kill prey.
  • Stinging nettles: poison, to try to avoid being eaten.

Famous quotes containing the word nature:

It is the nature of an hypothesis, when once a man has conceived it, that it assimulates every thing to itself as proper nourishment; and, from the first moment of your begetting it, it generally grows the stronger by every thing you see, hear, read, or understand. This is of great use.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)
