Indian Village Site (Witrock Area)

The Indian Village Site is an archaeological site near Sutherland, Iowa.

It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The National Park Service then noted:

This small Mill Creek Indian culture village is unique because it has been little disturbed since its occupation. It contained about 20 dwellings surrounded by a palisade and ditch. It dates from ca. A.D. 1000-1300. The inhabitants were semisedentary, and followed an agricultural/hunting subsistence pattern. The site is not open to the public.

Famous quotes containing the words indian, village and/or site:

    When an Indian is burned, his body may be broiled, it may be no more than a beefsteak. What of that? They may broil his heart, but they do not therefore broil his courage,—his principles. Be of good courage! That is the main thing.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village though;
    He will not see me stopping here
    To watch his woods fill up with snow.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

    The site of the true bottomless financial pit is the toy store. It’s amazing how much a few pieces of plastic and paper will sell for if the purchasers are parents or grandparent, especially when the manufacturers claim their product improves a child’s intellectual or physical development.
    Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
