Incidence Structure - Dual Structure

Dual Structure

If we interchange the role of "points" and "lines" in

C=(P,L,I)

the dual structure

C*=(L,P,I*)

is obtained, where I* is the inverse relation of I. Clearly

C**=C.

This is an abstract version of projective duality.

A structure C that is isomorphic to its dual C* is called self-dual.

Famous quotes containing the words dual and/or structure:

    Thee for my recitative,
    Thee in the driving storm even as now, the snow, the winter-day
    declining,
    Thee in thy panoply, thy measur’d dual throbbing and thy beat
    convulsive,
    Thy black cylindric body, golden brass and silvery steel,
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

    The question is still asked of women: “How do you propose to answer the need for child care?” That is an obvious attempt to structure conflict in the old terms. The questions are rather: “If we as a human community want children, how does the total society propose to provide for them?”
    Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
