As of 2004, Institut Montaigne estimated that there were in metropolitan France, including all generations of immigrant descendants:
- 51 million (85%) White people of European origin
- 6 million (10%) of people of Maghrebi origin
- 2 million (3.5%) of Black people
- 1 million (1.5%) people of Asian origin
