Origin of Name
The Hurlingham Club was founded in 1888 by the English community in the area, following the original Hurlingham Club, founded in Fulham (United Kingdom). According to the history of the Hurlingham Club, the name was inherited from the Hurlingham House, home of the club was founded, originally built by Dr. William Cadogan in 1760.
The word "ham" in Old English meant "house" may have been related to the name referring to "The House of Hurling", an ancient Irish sport. However, this has not been confirmed by staff of the Hurling Club in Fulham, who know the origin of the name.

Famous quotes containing the words origin of and/or origin:
“Someone had literally run to earth
In an old cellar hole in a byroad
The origin of all the family there.
Thence they were sprung, so numerous a tribe
That now not all the houses left in town
Made shift to shelter them without the help
Of here and there a tent in grove and orchard.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
“Each structure and institution here was so primitive that you could at once refer it to its source; but our buildings commonly suggest neither their origin nor their purpose.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
