Hunting Island State Park - Wildlife

Wildlife

The wildlife includes loggerhead turtles, deer, alligators, raccoons, diamondback rattlesnakes, and hundreds of species of birds. Of the birds, many are impressed by the abundance of herons and egrets. The interior lagoon (which was created by sand dredging in 1968) has become a natural wonderland and home to such species as seahorses and barracuda.

Each year, dozens gather to watch all the hatched eggs of the Loggerhead Turtle walk out to the ocean. The event is protected by the park rangers. In certain months, notices are put up to ban flashlights on the beach after dark to protect the turtles.

Famous quotes containing the word wildlife:

Russian forests crash down under the axe, billions of trees are dying, the habitations of animals and birds are layed waste, rivers grow shallow and dry up, marvelous landscapes are disappearing forever.... Man is endowed with creativity in order to multiply that which has been given him; he has not created, but destroyed. There are fewer and fewer forests, rivers are drying up, wildlife has become extinct, the climate is ruined, and the earth is becoming ever poorer and uglier.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)
