When cups went round at close of day
Is not that how good stories run?
The gods were sitting at the board
In their great house at Slievenamon.
They sang a drowsy song, or snored,
For all were full of wine and meat.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

‘Tis ill talking of halters in the house of a man that was hanged.
    Miguel De Cervantes (1547–1616)

Those craning birds are choice for you, songs that jump back
To the built voice, or fly with winter to the bells,
But do not travel down dumb wind like prodigals.
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love. Don’t be surly at home, then go out in the street and start grinning “Good morning” at total strangers.
    Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
