Hounds

Most hound type dogs share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Beyond this, however, generalizations about hounds are hard to come by, since the type encompasses quite a diverse lot. There are Pharaoh Hounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Afghans and Beagles, among others. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying.

Famous quotes containing the word hounds:

I was with Hercules and Cadmus once,
When in a wood of Crete they bayed the bear
With hounds of Sparta: never did I hear
Such gallant chiding; for besides the groves,
The skies, the fountains, every region near
Seemed all one mutual cry. I never heard
So musical a discord, such sweet thunder.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

I will have no Parsons around me but such as drink deep, ride to Hounds and caress the Wives and Daughters of their Parishioners. A Virtuous Parson does nothing to test or exercise the Faith of his Flock.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

‘Tis the white stag, Fame, we’re a-hunting,
Bid the world’s hounds come to horn!
    Ezra Pound (1885–1972)
