Horror (Garo) - Fictional History

Fictional History

Originally from a Demon World (魔界, Makai?), the Horrors appear in the human world, attracted by the darkness inside human beings that they feed on. The Horrors come in many forms; they usually come in a black-winged skeleton humanoid form that can fly and feed on humans. Beyond the basic skeletal humanoid form, most Horrors inhabit an object to wait for a human that they can possess, before coming out to feed out in the open. Others are animal themed such as a fish or a spider. Some rare ones feed without possessing a human host. Based on the object or animal form taken, they might take an "evolved" form, which are either mechanical or mythical monstrosities. They also speak in a language which could be understood by either a Makai Knight or a potential host, but will adopt the language a host speaks should one possesses a human. Gates to the human world are not open during the Yin Self Lapsing Night (陰我消滅の晩, Inga Shōmetsu no ban?) that occurs once every 20 years.

Each Horror has unique tastes, feeding on specific emotions or traits, and feeding in manners that differ from one to another. The Horror can cooperate with its host's blackest desire or completely take over the human being to feed upon its emotions. A Horror may be possessing a human with the potential host's consent, or just force its way into the said host. Either way, a human is considered dead upon possession. However, due to their feeding manners and tastes, Horrors are rather selective in choosing their hosts, instead of possessing any human near them. Horrors can manifest spiritual energy into physical objects such as chains or become objects like a watch to ingest a human. A Horror that possesses a human tends to prepare or play with its food first before eating. Horrors that feed in grotesque manners like animals are rare. Though they tend to look alike in their basic forms, their forms appear to be different when bursting out of the possessed human depending on the matter it appeared in the human world and its matter of consumption. The Horrors also gain new abilities in their new forms. However, once they use up the energies of their host they return to their basic form most of the time. Occasionally when a human-possessing Horror is defeated the host is returned to his/her original human state, but dies shortly thereafter.

However, Horrors can never truly die so long as darkness exists in the hearts of men, so upon a physical death, the Horror's essence is sealed within a Makaiken until its essence is formed into a dagger at the Watchdog's place. the said dagger is trusted to the Watchdog to be sent into the Demon World to be permanently dealt with. Trace essence also latch onto a Makai Knight and accumulate, requiring him to undergo a ritualistic purification periodically. Escaped Horror essence from Horrors slain by the Golden Knight Garo will accumulate over time and form Zaji.

Famous quotes containing the words fictional and/or history:

One of the proud joys of the man of letters—if that man of letters is an artist—is to feel within himself the power to immortalize at will anything he chooses to immortalize. Insignificant though he may be, he is conscious of possessing a creative divinity. God creates lives; the man of imagination creates fictional lives which may make a profound and as it were more living impression on the world’s memory.
    Edmond De Goncourt (1822–1896)

The history of all Magazines shows plainly that those which have attained celebrity were indebted for it to articles similar in natureto Berenice—although, I grant you, far superior in style and execution. I say similar in nature. You ask me in what does this nature consist? In the ludicrous heightened into the grotesque: the fearful coloured into the horrible: the witty exaggerated into the burlesque: the singular wrought out into the strange and mystical.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
