Thomas Nassiff of AbsolutePunk called Homesick "a record that is honest and entertaining", despite how "repetitive" and "dense it may be". Nassiff went on to say that the album wouldn't appeal to the public, but it would, however, be "welcomed with open arms" by the band's fans. When referring to the album's lyrics, Nassiff called the album "a concept one", with a theme of "the glory of being a musician" which encompasses having to be away from home for a period of time. "The Downfall of Us All", as Nassiff put it, "gets the listener psyched for the rest of the album", while Allmusic reviewer James Christopher Monger said, would gain an extra "life in countless montages on MTV reality shows and 30-second cola commercials". Monger said that the album was a group "of perfectly executed and fairly standard clean vocal post-hardcore emo-pop" which enlightens the "limitations of the genre". Monger called the backing vocals "Exciting at first" that would get lost in "into the waves of distortion mid-album", becoming a "audio equivalent of an energy drink crash". The final track on the album, "If It Means a Lot to You", was as Monger put it, difficult to be detached from the tracks that preceded; as they were "deafening, ultimately forgettable, over-compressed slabs of twentysomething angst".

Anthony Avina said in a review for Rock on Request, the album had "a unique sound that has elements" from other bands such as Chiodos. Naming "The Downfall of Us All", "Welcome to the Family", and the title track as the band showing off their "wide range of talent while producing a harmonious album" that the band's fans "will instantly fall in love with". Sputnikmusic's John Hanson said the album was a "incredibly derivative and plodding record" that was filled with "laughable moments". Punknews.org reviewer Elliot said the album had an "undeniable quality of melodic competence". With the a capella intro to "The Downfall of Us All" being "a little gimmicky", while "Have Faith in Me" was called a tribute to Blink-182.

Famous quotes containing the word reception:

He’s leaving Germany by special request of the Nazi government. First he sends a dispatch about Danzig and how 10,000 German tourists are pouring into the city every day with butterfly nets in their hands and submachine guns in their knapsacks. They warn him right then. What does he do next? Goes to a reception at von Ribbentropf’s and keeps yelling for gefilte fish!
    Billy Wilder (b. 1906)

To the United States the Third World often takes the form of a black woman who has been made pregnant in a moment of passion and who shows up one day in the reception room on the forty-ninth floor threatening to make a scene. The lawyers pay the woman off; sometimes uniformed guards accompany her to the elevators.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)

I gave a speech in Omaha. After the speech I went to a reception elsewhere in town. A sweet old lady came up to me, put her gloved hand in mine, and said, “I hear you spoke here tonight.” “Oh, it was nothing,” I replied modestly. “Yes,” the little old lady nodded, “that’s what I heard.”
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)
