The Tilly House of 1609 is located on the Johannis Square. It has a beautiful Renaissance door, which survived the fires of the Thirty Years' War. The Count of Tilly, commander of the Imperial forces, is said to have spent a night here.

The Reichspräsidentenhaus links the old part of the town with the Hafendamm and was opened in 1929. The beautiful Glockenspiel (carillon) is very popular, and plays well known tunes at set times.

The steeple of the Lutheran church is a symbol of Holzminden. The interior was rebuilt in 1577 and made into a two-room church.

The Severinsche Haus is a richly decorated house dating from 1683 known for its slanting floors. It is the largest of the bourgeois houses, and is decorated with a distinctive weathercock.

Famous quotes containing the word sights:

O Lord, methought what pain it was to drown,
What dreadful noise of waters in my ears!
What sights of ugly death within my eyes!
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

We may have civilized bodies and yet barbarous souls. We are blind to the real sights of this world; deaf to its voice; and dead to its death. And not till we know, that one grief outweighs ten thousand joys will we become what Christianity is striving to make us.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

Television hangs on the questionable theory that whatever happens anywhere should be sensed everywhere. If everyone is going to be able to see everything, in the long run all sights may lose whatever rarity value they once possessed, and it may well turn out that people, being able to see and hear practically everything, will be specially interested in almost nothing.
