Holiday Village Mall - History

History

Holiday Village Mall was built in 1957. The mall opened two years later with an Albertsons grocery store and a Skaggs drug store as the center's anchors. A second expansion included the addition of 160,000 square-feet of retail space. A third expansion in 1966 added a 105,000 square-foot Montgomery Ward store to the shopping center. The following year the mall was enclosed and a Buttrey-Osco store was constructed. However, while the Buttrey-Osco was nearing completion, a major fire destroyed the new building in October 1967. The store was subsequently rebuilt.

In 1976, a Herberger's department store was added the mall. The same year, J. C. Penney closed its 60-year-old store in downtown and relocated to the shopping mall. In 1979, Holiday Village Mall was acquired by Macerich, which renovated the mall the same year.

During 1985, Skaggs' parent company American Stores and Buttrey-Osco's parent company Jewel Companies merged and converted the Skaggs stores into Osco Drug stores. In 1991, the mall underwent an expansion. During this time, Buttrey left the mall for a new location east of the complex. The Buttrey store was then demolished for a Sears department store.

During 1999, the mall underwent a major renovation and the mall's eastern anchor, Montgomery Ward, closed its 33-year-old location. The vacant Montgomery Ward store was soon replaced by Herberger's, which moved its older location on the mall's upper level in 2000. Albertsons closed its Holiday Village Mall location in 2000. A free-standing Osco Drug was planned to replace the vacant Montgomery Ward auto center in 2001. The planned Osco Drug was never finalized and a Hollywood Video store was opened in the empty auto center in 2004, which closed in 2010. In 2005, Ross Stores announced plans to open a store in the vacant Albertsons store. After numerous delays, the store was finally opened in April 2007. Macerich sold the Holiday Village Mall to GK Development in July 2006. In 2007, the mall's Scheels All Sports store was closed and larger store was built on the site of the former Herberger's store. The empty Scheels space was quickly filled by Bed Bath & Beyond in October 2007. In 2009, CVS Pharmacy, which acquired the Osco Drug stores from Albertsons in 2005, closed its store after a new free-standing location was built nearby. The old CVS store was replaced by a Big Lots in November 2011.

Classes struggle, some classes triumph, others are eliminated. Such is history; such is the history of civilization for thousands of years.

The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

To a surprising extent the war-lords in shining armour, the apostles of the martial virtues, tend not to die fighting when the time comes. History is full of ignominious getaways by the great and famous.
