Hiwassee

The name Hiwassee is derived from the Cherokee word Ayuhwasi, meaning "savanna" or "large meadow". The name has been applied to several entities past and present in the U.S. states of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee:

  • Hiwassee River, a tributary of the Tennessee River that flows through northern Georgia, western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee
    • Hiwassee Dam, a Tennessee Valley Authority hydroelectric dam on the river of the same name in Cherokee County, North Carolina
    • Hiwassee Lake, the reservoir created by Hiwassee Dam
  • Hiawassee, Georgia, a town
  • Hiwassee, North Carolina, a small community adjacent to Hiwassee Dam
  • Hiwassee College, a junior college in Madisonville, Tennessee
  • Great Hiwassee, an 18th-century Overhill Cherokee village once located along the Hiwassee River in Polk County, Tennessee
  • Little Hiwassee, an 18th-century Middle Cherokee village once located along the Hiwassee River in Cherokee County, North Carolina
