History Of Writing Ancient Numbers

The first method of counting was counting on fingers. This evolved into sign language for the hand-to-eye communication of numbers. But this was not writing.

Tallies by carving notches in wood, bone, and stone were used for at least forty thousand years. Stone age cultures, including ancient Native American groups, used tallies for gambling with horses, slaves, personal services and trade-goods.

Roman numerals evolved from this primitive system of cutting notches. It was once believed that they came from alphabetic symbols, or from pictographs like the hand, but these theories have been disproved.

Famous quotes containing the words history of, history, writing, ancient and/or numbers:

The history of a soldier’s wound beguiles the pain of it.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

What is most interesting and valuable in it, however, is not the materials for the history of Pontiac, or Braddock, or the Northwest, which it furnishes; not the annals of the country, but the natural facts, or perennials, which are ever without date. When out of history the truth shall be extracted, it will have shed its dates like withered leaves.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

As I am writing my thought, it sometimes escapes me; but this makes me remember my weakness, which I constantly forget. This is as instructive to me as my forgotten thought; for I strive only to know my nothingness.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)

With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.
    Bible: Hebrew Job, 12:12.

Out of the darkness where Philomela sat,
Her fairy numbers issued. What then ailed me?
My ears are called capacious but they failed me,
Her classics registered a little flat!
    I rose, and venomously spat.
    John Crowe Ransom (1888–1974)
