History of The Scotland National Football Team

The history of the Scotland national football team dates back to the first ever international football match in 1872. Until the Second World War, Scotland mainly competed against the other Home Nations in the British Home Championship, with the most keenly contested fixture being the match with England.

After the Second World War, the Home Nations rejoined FIFA and started to participate in international competitions. Scotland have qualified for seven World Cups and two European Championships, but have never progressed beyond the first stage of a major tournament. Scotland have not qualified for a tournament since the 1998 World Cup, but have recovered somewhat in recent years and came close to qualifying for the 2008 European Championship, in a group which included the then World champions Italy and 2006 World Cup runners up France.

Famous quotes containing the words history of, football team, history, scotland, national, football and/or team:

The history of mankind interests us only as it exhibits a steady gain of truth and right, in the incessant conflict which it records between the material and the moral nature.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

You can’t be a Real Country unless you have A BEER and an airline—it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER.
    Frank Zappa (1940–1993)

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

Four and twenty at her back
    And they were a’ clad out in green;
Tho the King of Scotland had been there
The warst o’ them might hae been his Queen.

On we lap and awa we rade
Till we cam to yon bonny ha’
Whare the roof was o’ the beaten gold
And the floor was o’ the cristal a’.
—Unknown. The Wee Wee Man (l. 21–28)

You cannot become thorough Americans if you think of yourselves in groups. America does not consist of groups. A man who thinks of himself as belonging to a particular national group in America has not yet become an American.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

You can’t be a Real Country unless you have A BEER and an airline—it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a BEER.
    Frank Zappa (1940–1993)

    Is my team ploughing,
That I was used to drive
    And hear the harness jingle
    When I was man alive?
    —A.E. (Alfred Edward)
