Immigration and Settlement Era

For more information on the earliest inhabitants and explorers of Saskatchewan see History of Immigration – Western Canada, Category:Ethnic groups in Canada.

The settlements patterns were closely tied to the availability of transportation (especially railways) and the fertility of the soil. Ethnic groups tended to settle together, so they could built support networks for religion, language, customs, and finding marriage partners.

Famous quotes containing the words immigration, settlement and/or era:

I was interested to see how a pioneer lived on this side of the country. His life is in some respects more adventurous than that of his brother in the West; for he contends with winter as well as the wilderness, and there is a greater interval of time at least between him and the army which is to follow. Here immigration is a tide which may ebb when it has swept away the pines; there it is not a tide, but an inundation, and roads and other improvements come steadily rushing after.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The Puritans, to keep the remembrance of their unity one with another, and of their peaceful compact with the Indians, named their forest settlement CONCORD.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

How many a man has dated a new era in his life from the reading of a book.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
