Removal of The Lords Spiritual 1642

The right of the Lords Spiritual to sit in the House of Lords, was removed during the Long Parliament under the Clergy Act 1640 (passed in 1642). As this legislation had passed both Houses and received royal assent, the Royalists accepted it was a valid law. After the restoration of the monarch in 1660 the Lords Spiritual were only readmitted to membership of the House of Lords when new legislation was passed.

Famous quotes containing the words removal of, removal, lords and/or spiritual:

Anyone who seeks for the true causes of miracles, and strives to understand natural phenomena as an intelligent being, and not to gaze at them like a fool, is set down and denounced as an impious heretic by those, whom the masses adore as the interpreters of nature and the gods. Such persons know that, with the removal of ignorance, the wonder which forms their only available means for proving and preserving their authority would vanish also.
    Baruch (Benedict)

    Men of England, wherefore plough
For the lords who lay ye low?
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

A symbol is indeed the only possible expression of some invisible essence, a transparent lamp about a spiritual flame; while allegory is one of many possible representations of an embodied thing, or familiar principle, and belongs to fancy and not to imagination: the one is a revelation, the other an amusement.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
