History of Nationality in Gibraltar - Current Gibraltarian Citizenship

Current Gibraltarian Citizenship

See also: Citizenship of the European Union

The citizens of Gibraltar, although British Overseas Territories citizens, may apply for registration as a British citizen (an entitlement that cannot be refused) under section 5 of the British Nationality Act 1981 and are considered UK Nationals for EU Community purposes with all consequential rights and entitlements.

Gibraltar is within the EU for some purposes, including free movement of persons. Since joining the EU, individuals from member states can seek employment and reside in Gibraltar without the need for a work or residence permit. Non EU citizens need both a work and resident permit, and are only likely to get these if they already have a job offer and their employer satisfies the Government that their skills are unique. However, special arrangements can be made for high net worth individuals.

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or citizenship:

You will belong to that minority which, according to current Washington doctrine, must be protected in its affluence lest its energy and initiative be impaired. Your position will be in contrast to that of the poor, to whom money, especially if it is from public sources, is held to be deeply damaging.
    John Kenneth Galbraith (b. 1908)

To see self-sufficiency as the hallmark of maturity conveys a view of adult life that is at odds with the human condition, a view that cannot sustain the kinds of long-term commitments and involvements with other people that are necessary for raising and educating a child or for citizenship in a democratic society.
    Carol Gilligan (20th century)
