Histon and Impington - Early History

Early History

Some of the track ways that pass though these villages are believed to be prehistoric, flint tools have been dug up in and around the area and aerial photographs show evidence of ancient settlements including Iron Age and Roman. Pieces of Roman pottery have been found in the area.

The earliest part of Impington to be inhabited is near the junction of Cambridge Road and Arbury Road. In this location there is a large ancient settlement - thought to have been built by the Ancient Britons. The settlement was taken over by the Romans when they invaded Britain. There are several roads in Impington that are thought to be based on Roman roads. The Parish is likely to date from about the sixth century. At this time a Saxon tribe called the Empings lived there. Over time dukes have gone off to help prevent the Danes from invading, William the 1st took interest and sorted out and arguement over the town (then 'Epintone') between the Norman Sheriff of Cambridge and the church.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or history:

In the true sense one’s native land, with its background of tradition, early impressions, reminiscences and other things dear to one, is not enough to make sensitive human beings feel at home.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
