    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

By nature servile, people attempt at first glance to find signs of good breeding in the appearance of those who occupy more exalted stations.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

I don’t pop my cork for ev’ry guy I see.
    Dorothy Fields (1904–1974)

All our civilization had meant nothing. The same culture that had nurtured the kindly enlightened people among whom I had been brought up, carried around with it war. Mary Heaton Vorse (1874–1966)
