Highland Regional High School - School Prayer Case

School Prayer Case

In 1993, Highland Regional High School students voted to allow a prayer before their graduation ceremony. The school district was quickly sued by a graduating senior with the support of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey over separation of church and state. The case was heard by the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, which ruled against the school district in a 9-4 decision.

Famous quotes containing the words school, prayer and/or case:

And this school wasn’t keeping anymore,
Unless for penitents who took their seat
Upon its doorsteps as at mercy’s feet
To make up for a lack of meditation.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Now stamp the Lord’s Prayer on a grain of rice,
A Bible-leaved of all the written woods
Strip to this tree: a rocking alphabet,
Genesis in the root, the scarecrow word,
And one light’s language in the book of trees.
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

There are a great many of these accusers, and they have been accusing me now for a great many years, and what is more, they approached you at the most impressionable age, when some of you were children or adolescents; and literally won their case by default, because there was no one to defend me.
    Socrates (469–399 B.C.)
