High Sheriff of Norfolk

High Sheriff Of Norfolk

This is a list of High Sheriffs of Norfolk. The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown and is appointed annually (in March) by the Crown. He was originally the principal law enforcement officer in the county and presided at the Assizes and other important county meetings . Most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. There was a single High Sheriff serving the two counties of Norfolk and Suffolk until 1576.

Famous quotes containing the words high and/or sheriff:

Processions that lack high stilts have nothing that catches the eye.
What if my great-granddad had a pair that were twenty foot high,
And mine were but fifteen foot, no modern stalks upon higher,
Some rogue of the world stole them to patch up a fence or a fire.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

The man’s an M.D., like you. He’s entitled to his opinion. Or do you want me to charge him with confusing a country doctor?
—Robert M. Fresco. Jack Arnold. Sheriff Jack Andrews (Nestor Paiva)
