High Sheriff of Derbyshire

High Sheriff Of Derbyshire

This is a list of High Sheriffs of Derbyshire from 1568.

This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it.

The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. The High Sheriff changes every March.

From 1068 until 1568 the position existed as High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests. From 1568 also see High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire

Famous quotes containing the words high and/or sheriff:

Someday soon, we hope that all middle and high school will have required courses in child rearing for girls and boys to help prepare them for one of the most important and rewarding tasks of their adulthood: being a parent. Most of us become parents in our lifetime and it is not acceptable for young people to be steeped in ignorance or questionable folklore when they begin their critical journey as mothers and fathers.
    James P. Comer (20th century)

The man’s an M.D., like you. He’s entitled to his opinion. Or do you want me to charge him with confusing a country doctor?
—Robert M. Fresco. Jack Arnold. Sheriff Jack Andrews (Nestor Paiva)
