Annual ridership has fallen since 2007, to 307 million as of 2011, though the Kyushu line has seen significant gains while use of other lines have fallen. Japan's HSR system has lost its first place ranking worldwide in annual passengers to mainland China's HSR network. Cumulative ridership since October 1964 has surpassed 5 billion passengers for Tokaido line and 10 billion passengers for Japan's entire HSR network, respectively, far surpassing the next most used network, French TGV/Thalys/Eurostar at 2 billion passengers.
