Located just beyond the boundaries of Greater London and with fast railway lines into the capital, Hertsmere is typically middle-class commuter territory, similar to the type of constituency found in Surrey and Buckinghamshire.
The Aldenham East ward, assessed as the least deprived out of 8414 in England in IMD2000, is located in the seat, and although there are some Labour-voting areas in Borehamwood, the seat is solidly Tory, even in Labour landslide years.
