The current station, which was designed by W.N. Ashbee was opened by the Great Eastern Railway on Monday 27 February 1888, replacing a station further to the east which dated from the opening of the branch line from Broxbourne in 1843.

It is on the Hertford East Branch of the West Anglia Main Line, and train services are provided by Greater Anglia. There are two platforms, one of which is generally only used at peak times.

In addition, the station also boasts both a station kiosk and a taxi service.

Famous quotes containing the words east, railway and/or station:

The current of our thoughts made as sudden bends as the river, which was continually opening new prospects to the east or south, but we are aware that rivers flow most rapidly and shallowest at these points.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

...I believe it is now the duty of the slaves of the South to rebuke their masters for their robbery, oppression and crime.... No station or character can destroy individual responsibility, in the matter of reproving sin.
    Angelina Grimké (1805–1879)
