Heroes Day in Tamil Eelam
Heroes Day (Tamil: Maaverar Naal) in the Sri Lankan secessionist region of Tamil Eelam is observed every 27 November. The first LTTE cadre to die was Lt Sathiyanathan alias Shankar, who was also known as Suresh, died on November 27, 1982. It became a tradition to in LTTE to pay tribute to all the cadre's contribution to the movement on this day. Some of the Sri Lankan and Indian media usually point out that the Heros day is celebrated on the birthday of LTTE leader Prabhakaran, and his Heros day speach as his brithday speach. The reason for this confusion is that Prabhakaran's birthday is on November 26.

Famous quotes containing the words heroes and/or day:
“The murmurs of many a famous river on the other side of the globe reach even to us here, as to more distant dwellers on its banks; many a poets stream, floating the helms and shields of heroes on its bosom.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The prairies were dust. Day after day, summer after summer, the scorching winds blew the dust and the sun was brassy in a yellow sky. Crop after crop failed. Again and again the barren land must be mortgaged for taxes and food and next years seed. The agony of hope ended when there was not harvest and no more credit, no money to pay interest and taxes; the banker took the land. Then the bank failed.”
—Rose Wilder Lane (18861968)
