Scarf is a superb teacher and adviser, a concerned and dedicated colleague, and has been an inspiration and role model to his students at Yale and Stanford and to his colleagues all over the world. His clarity of thought and vision and thoroughness of knowledge are highly appreciated by his students and the readers of his work. He has supervised about 30 PhD students.
