In Popular Culture
Smith was portrayed in the American television series Deadwood by Ray McKinnon. The letter written by the character of Seth Bullock in the third season episode "Unauthorized Cinnamon" is similar to the August 21, 1876 letter to Reverend J. S. Chadwick written by the real Seth Bullock.

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:
“It is among the ranks of school-age children, those six- to twelve-year-olds who once avidly filled their free moments with childhood play, that the greatest change is evident. In the place of traditional, sometimes ancient childhood games that were still popular a generation ago, in the place of fantasy and make- believe play . . . todays children have substituted television viewing and, most recently, video games.”
—Marie Winn (20th century)
“The second fundamental feature of culture is that all culture has an element of striving.”
—Johan Huizinga (18721945)
