Henry Addison de Land

Henry Addison Deland (born October 25, 1834, died March 13, 1908) was a baking soda manufacturer from Fairport, New York. The Henry DeLand House he built there is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Later, he founded DeLand, Florida (which had been formerly called Persimmsons Hollow for the Persimmons trees that were abundant in the area) and the DeLand academy which became Stetson University. He suffered a severe financial loss due to guaranteeing Orange crops for farmers who rented his land.

Famous quotes containing the words henry, addison and/or land:

There is no alleviation for the sufferings of mankind except veracity of thought and of action, and the resolute facing of the world as it is when the garment of make-believe by which pious hands have hidden its uglier features is stripped off.
    —Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895)

For wheresoe’er I turn my ravished eyes,
Gay gilded scenes and shining prospects rise,
    Poetic fields encompass me around,
And still I seem to tread on classic ground.
    —Joseph Addison (1672–1719)

The whole land seems aroused to discussion on the province of woman, and I am glad of it. We are willing to bear the brunt of the storm, if we can only be the means of making a break in that wall of public opinion which lies right in the way of woman’s rights, true dignity, honor and usefulness.
    Angelina Grimké (1805–1879)
