Heinlein Juveniles - Puddin' Stories For Girls

Puddin' Stories For Girls

Upon delivery of one of his early juveniles, his editor at Scribner's commented that she wished somebody would write some stories for girls. Heinlein took this as a challenge and wrote a short story for girls. The story, a first-person tale featuring Maureen "Puddin'", appeared under the byline "R. A. Heinlein" in Calling All Girls magazine. He wrote two more, and planned four additional stories with the goal of publishing a collection titled Men Are Exasperating, but he never wrote any more and the Puddin' stories have never been collected in one volume.

  • "Poor Daddy", 1949
  • "Cliff and the Calories", 1950
  • "The Bulletin Board", 1951

Castaway, your time is a flat sea that doesn’t stop,
with no new land to make for and no new stories to swap.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

Would you approve of your young sons, young daughters—because girls can read as well as boys—reading this book? Is it a book that you would have lying around in your own house? Is it a book that you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?
    Mervyn Griffith-Jones (1909–1979)
