Institute of Mathematics
In 1547, the first chair of mathematics was entrusted to the physician Jacob Curio. Today, areas of research include:
- Complex analysis: automorphic functions and modular forms
- Arithmetic: algebraic number theory, algorithmic algebra, and arithmetical geometry
- Topology and geometry: geometric partial differential equations, algebraic topology, differential topology, and differential geometry

Famous quotes containing the words institute and/or mathematics:
“Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles & organising its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“In mathematics he was greater
Than Tycho Brahe, or Erra Pater:
For he, by geometric scale,
Could take the size of pots of ale;
Resolve, by sines and tangents straight,
If bread and butter wanted weight;
And wisely tell what hour o th day
The clock doth strike, by algebra.”
—Samuel Butler (16121680)
