The origins of the name "Heckmondwike" lie in Old English. It translates as "Dwelling or (dairy) farm of a man called Hēahmund", formed of the person's name with the word wīc. The settlement was recorded as Hedmundewic in the Domesday Book of 1086 and later as Hecmundewik, sometime in the 13th century.
